Executive Director of Finance

Full-time, Regular, Exempt position

The University of Maine System School of Law is seeking applications for an Executive Director of Finance (EDF). T his position is broadly responsible for the overall budget planning and fiscal management of the various components of the University of Maine School of Law (Law School) and its Foundation. The EDF promotes sound, yet innovative business policies and practices. The EDF ensures the integration of budget planning throughout the organization, ensuring consistency with the overall mission, goals, and strategic objectives of the Law School. These responsibilities include the coordination of all accounting functions of the general ledger, capital projects, long-term bonds, fixed assets, restricted and endowments, annual fund, payroll, cash management, operational banking, tax compliance, sponsored programs, operational issues involving revenue bond financing, and the lead role in financial statement in coordination with Maine’s Public Universities System Finance, including the Law School Foundation. The EDF has responsibility for substantively establishing and monitoring the internal financial controls that comply with the Administrative Practice Letters (APLs), oversight of the budget development process, balance sheet account reconciliations, creation, and maintenance of ad-hoc and periodic reports, monthly closing, and the financial year-end close process.

The work location is 300 Fore Street, Portland, Maine. The successful candidate may have the opportunity to establish a hybrid work schedule.

Based on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant, the annual salary range is mid $80's plus a 10% employer contribution to the UMS retirement plan. Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field of finance, accounting, business management, or public administration or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum of seven years of demonstrated success in a leadership or supervisory role in a complex organization.

  • Advanced technical accounting, tax compliance, internal controls, and grants and contracts knowledge.

  • Knowledge of sophisticated enterprise resource planning systems.

  • The ability to develop and maintain accurate reports of financial information for relevant internal and external reporting and the ability to develop and maintain compliance requirements, statements, and financial modeling forecasts.

  • Confidentiality, collegiality, and a spotless record of integrity.

  • Familiarity with and the ability to clearly explain complex financial matters to senior level executives and Board members.

    Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in a related field.

  • Experience in higher education, government and/or public accounting organization.

  • Knowledge of GASB and FASB higher education financial statements and A133 audits.

  • Knowledge of investments.

  • Advanced proficiency with business applications including Microsoft Office Suite, knowledge of automated financial systems, and PeopleSoft software.
