WSP USA Associate Consultant, Environmental Science in San Diego, California

This Opportunity

WSP is seeking a team-oriented and self-directed candidate to support their San Diego Aquatic Sciences Team. Recent experience supporting regulatory compliance programs in the aquatic environment and/or experience working in an environmental laboratory setting. Experience working as part of field teams, and being knowledgeable in the collection of field data, particularly related to marine sample collection and use of water quality collection instruments, and experience with scientific diving and boat operation is desirable. Strong field, writing, and data QA/QC skills are required.

Experience and fluency using MS Excel, the ability to follow strict QA/QC procedures and strong attention to detail is required. Knowledge of statistical procedures, analytical chemistry, and project management skills are desired.

Candidate must have knowledge of NPDES programs, the Clean Water Act Sections 401 and 404; the Porter-Cologne Act; the Marine Protection, Research, and Sanctuaries Act; the Coastal Zone Management Act; Stormwater programs; and other applicable local, state, and federal regulations and guidance.

Your Impact

• Participating in field collection teams with senior scientists and other staff level scientists

• Collecting sediment and water samples

• Participating in dive surveys (optional)

• Operating field collection equipment and boats (e.g. sediment and water samplers, water quality instruments), including trailering

• Recording field measurements and preparing field reports

• Managing and analyzing field collected data

• Analyzing laboratory chemistry results

• Preparing report text and maps, data tables and summaries, and conducting statistical analyses of field collected and laboratory data

• Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) related to data and report review

• Technical and scientific writing

• Business Development and Project Management

• Participating in regional scientific organizations

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related life sciences field.

  • 1 to 3 years of experience working as an environmental scientist and completing environmental surveys, fieldwork, habitat and impact assessments, and/or construction monitoring.

  • Prior experience with GIS software and Trimble GPS units and ability to use technology for data collection.

  • Analytical skills, and experience with research techniques, local/regional ecology and habitats, and applicable species/discipline required.

  • Highly familiar with relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.

  • Capable self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.

  • Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.

Compensation

Expected Salary: $64,700-$88,880

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
